The success of small and medium business of today has a new analytics tool. Social mediais the unsuspecting measuring tool that is unlocking innumerable business benefits.

Businesses must keep on top of social media: In order to profit from social media, businesses must ensure they stay on top of recent developments.

According to Tim Gibbon, director of consultancy firm Elemental, the medium has evolved dramatically in recent years and businesses need to ensure they keep up with the ever-changing landscape.

He added that it is also important that people are realistic about what a social media presence can achieve, as just because they have profiles on sites such as Twitter and Facebook, it does not necessarily mean they will achieve anything.

"Indeed, quite the opposite can happen; when a business is not prepared with even a little understanding of the changing platforms, brand dilution is possible," Mr Gibbon added.

Mr Gibbon's comments follow research by Regus which highlighted that 41 per cent of firms based across the UK have used social media sites to win new businesses, up eight per cent compared with last year.

It also found that almost half (48 per cent) of UK-based companies are currently using some form of social media to connect and engage with their existing customer base.

A third of companies questioned said they spend up to 20 per cent of their marketing budgets on social media activities.
